Calling Me Home by Jule Kibler will be discussed at the Between the Covers Book Club meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, in the back room of Hartley Public Library. Calling Me Home introduces us to 89-year-old Isabelle McAllister and Dorrie Curtis, Isabelle’s 30-something hairdresser who Isabelle recruits to drive her to a funeral about a thousand miles away. For Isabelle, it’s a journey to the past, when she, over time, confesses that in 1930’s Kentucky she fell deeply in love with the black son of her family’s housekeeper. For Dorrie, a black, single mother, it’s a look into the future as she considers the importance of her current love and the relationship with her son. This novel is the first for Kibler and was born from her knowledge of some family lore; as a teen, her paternal grandmother fell in love with a young black man. However this relationship was broken up by their families. She also learned that the hometown of her father had signs at the city limits warning blacks to be gone by sundown.
