Members of Between the Covers will be meeting May 29.

Female friendship is the theme of Lisa See's book, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan".  And it's the book Between the Covers members will be talking about when they meet at Hartley Public Library from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29.

Lily and Snow Flower were paired up as lifelong friends or laotongs at the age of seven as was the custom for some privileged girls in nineteenth-century China.  As the years go by they are bound together through a secret language called nu shu ("women's writing") allowing them to grow closer as they live within the rigid codes of conduct women were expected to follow.  Through foot binding, arranged marriages, childbirth, and house training the two grow ever closer.  Yet, as the years go by a misunderstanding develops and their lifelong friendship is suddenly in danger of being torn apart.

The book club welcomes all new members or anyone who would like to join in or just sit and observe.  We meet the last Tuesday of the month in the meeting room of the Library.  You may pick up a book for discussion at the Library desk.
